MISSED LESSONS:

Payment for the lesson slot is required even if the student does not attend for any reason except dangerous road conditions or when I have to cancel. If given at least 24 hours notice, occasionally I can put a student into another's cancellation. Students may choose to swap lesson times with another student on the occasion that a conflict arises. To avoid confusion, please use the most current studio schedule that will be posted on the website and confirm the date, day and time with the student with which you are trading. When you trade times, please notify me of the swap. (Thanks!) Tardies on the student's part will not be made up. Occasionally I will have to cancel lessons for rehearsals or performances (usually the 6pm and later slots). Make–ups for those lessons will be scheduled at a mutually convenient time.

NON-ENROLLED STUDENTS:

If a student cannot enroll in regular weekly lessons, individual lessons may be available at the rate of $27/half–hour, $40/45-minute and $54/hour. My availability for lessons of this type is not guaranteed and will be scheduled after the enrolled students are scheduled.

PRACTICING & MATERIALS:

Regular, daily practicing is essential for progress. Before committing to flute lessons, make sure that there is time in the daily schedule for practicing and that both the student and parent are committed to make this happen. The length of the student's lesson is the minimum daily practicing time required to study flute with me. The student will need to have a flute that is in good condition for lessons and a metronome and a music stand for home practicing. I will provide a 3-ring binder and notebook for the student. Music will need to be purchased throughout the year. Expect about $30-40 a year for music. Sheet Music Service of Portland 503/222-9607 is the best place in town to get music.

ATTENDANCE:

Students are expected to attend their lesson each week, on time and prepared. If time allows, students should warm–up before coming to the lesson. Students should have their flute and music and notebook each week. The flute will need to be well maintained because a flute that is out of adjustment causes frustration to the student and can initiate bad habits. The closest repair shop that I like to send people to is Wally's Music in Oregon City – 503/656–5323.

PERFORMING, ETC:

This includes recitals, Solo and Ensemble contest and includes providing an accompanist for pieces that need piano accompaniment. I will help you find good accompanists, but scheduling rehearsals with them is up to you. Pieces must be well rehearsed when they are performed. That means more than just one run through. I also encourage any outside performing opportunities (church, talent shows, family gatherings, etc.), auditioned groups (college, All–State and All–Northwest, WIBC, local youth orchestras), honor bands and orchestras and Greater Portland Flute Society events. These "extra" ensembles often provide exciting discoveries in the area of creating great music, which is why we're all doing this, right? There are also many classes, recitals, masterclasses and workshops given each year that provide opportunities to hear great players and teachers.

CONSISTENT IMPROVEMENT:

I never expect perfection, but I do expect consistency and improvement. If there are too many weeks of unprepared lessons and excuses we will sit down and re–evaluate to see if lessons are really a priority and benefiting the student. Please don't waste my time, your time and your (parents') money!

POLICY ON DISCONTINUING STUDY:

One month's notice, please. Once you have discontinued lessons, the best I can do is put you on my waiting list in case there is an opening when you'd like to return to study.
